A review of The Mill by PD written on Tuesday 30th of November 1999
Certainly one of the best pubs in Cambridge, with a terrific atmosphere most of the time: relaxing during the day, snug during the evening.
Oak beams, low ceilings and tucked away tables make it a great antidote to terrible wine bar 'pubs' popular elsewhere, though the music choice that plays most of the time is generally inane (it's either Irish or Shania Twain).
Still, the nice selection of real ales are sufficient to make you ignore the tunes: Teakstons pervade, with Old Pec on almost continually, and Black Sheep and XB to back it up, plus general favourites like Pride, Speck and Adnams Best Bitter there as well.
They used to have guest beers, but these have since become less of an event. Prices are reasonable for Cambridge (£2.05 for Adnams, £2.60ish for Guiness, £2.65 for Stella), but certainly not great (gone are the days when you could safely say that the Mill was cheaper than the Anchor).
Being a tiny pub within, there's no pool table or decent game machine (a solitary flashing one-armed bandit is all) to swallow your money, so only come here if you want good beer and a good atmosphere, and very friendly and competent bar staff.
From May through the summer this place is packed, and, due to students having exams almost next door and coming in for a pint afterwards, the Mill is often practically run dry. But they do tend to stock up in the hot months, so if you want to grab a nice lager in a plastic and take it to sit out on Mill Green (a lush patch of grass overlooking the Cam and Silver Street bridge), you'll as likely as not be able to. Bottom line? A great pub, which could conceivably be even greater..
