"I didn't actually eat there but hear me out."

A review of Fagito by B. Benson written on Saturday 14th of July 2012

Yes, you read the title correctly, but I feel I still have a valid and possibly interesting opinion to offer on Fagito's fine establishment, as I did once visit.

It was a cold, dark night, like many other nights that pass in the suburban metropolis of Cambridge, but in the way of these things this was to be something special/mildly different from a typical night out.

The day was Friday. I distinctly remember because my comrades and I had decided that we would not chance a trip to the local discotheque (you know the one) as such nights are renowned for slightly elevated levels of danger for students, especially those wearing the fine garb of skinny jeans or chinos, as were we.

Ambling through the gloom I found myself wondering if the journey could be worth enduring the bitter cold of the Cambridge night - it was already gone bedtime - and only my friend's enthusiastic recommendations of Fagito's pulled me through. 'Fagito's will care for us,' he said, 'Fagito's cares for all those who have faith in the kebab'.

This, I believe, is an appropriate moment to highlight something that is essential to consider when reviewing Fagito's - if you are not already on Mill Road, you are probably miles away. The quest to Fagito's is not one to be undertaken lightly. Only those with the stoutest of hearts or emptiest of bellies could ever hope to reach it, and actually those with empty bellies would probably just go somewhere nearer to them to sate their hunger. And they would miss out. They would miss out on the sheer joy and ecstasy felt by myself and I believe every other visitor to Fagito's when stepping from the glacial chill of the harsh outdoors into the womb-like comfort and warmth that is Fagito's main branch on Mill Road.

Alas, this is the point when I must let you down, dear reader, as I would conventionally be expected to provide you with a bite-by-bite account of the pure deliciousness that is eating food from Fagito's, yet I have no such account to give - I wasn't really hungry and try not to spend too much money on nights out anyway. However, I cannot stress enough how welcoming a place Fagito's, Cambridge, is - despite the fact I was not contributing in any way to the financial well-being of the outlet, not for one second did I feel like I was unwanted, unloved, or that I was coldly taking advantage of the heat produced by the various cooking appliances (which I suppose I was, but I wholeheartedly regret this now).

The best indication I can give you, though, is that one member of my fellowship saw fit to purchase a large from Fagito's. This may be because he was a rower but regardless he seemed to enjoy it greatly. The other of my quest party (and I know this review has sometimes dipped into a more jovial and whimsical tone but this is absolutely true) has since visited Fagito's for food three times in twenty-four hours. These two examples speak volumes about the undoubtable quality and value of the food on offer here.

They say that, in life, the important thing is always the journey and not the destination. Like the ascent of Mount Everest, the quest for the Holy Grail, or the journey of the wise-men to find Jesus (the religious figure, not the Cambridge college, ho ho ho, though saying that I'm not entirely sure how to get to Jesus college - I digress), the journey to Fagito's is one of the great journeys undertaken by man, no matter where you begin it from.

The hardships through which I battled on the path to Fagito's were more than justly rewarded by my experience of Fagito's itself - bearing in mind, of course, that I did not even partake in the nourishment offered there - and the immensely positive effect this journey had on my personal development into the man I wish to become.

Fagito's is, however, the exception to that old saying about journeys - the destination and its promise of kebab is the butter to the bread, the cheese to the biscuits, the dog to the man of the journey it takes to get there.

This is what the various other quests I have mentioned did not have, and for that reason alone, I flippin' love Fagito's..
