A review of Carlton Arms by Lins written on Monday 1st of August 2011
My husband and I went to the Carlton Arms for a drink Sat afternoon 30 July, the day they reopened for business after the fire. We expected bunting, news of up and coming events, previews of menus, bubbly friendly staff. Instead the inside of the pub was empty, families sat outside drinking and smoking with no ash trays, tables with empty glasses. The uncomfortable picnic benches were in need of a rub down and a coat of paint. The inside of the pub had been painted but lacked any kind of personality - not a bit of wallpaper, vase of flowers on the bar a picture of before and after, no energy at all. The tables and chairs were basic hard wooden ones, not ones you would wish to sit on. The chalkboard on the wall outside had the details of an old event - not the event I heard about the next day that was held there. I certainly would have checked it out if I had known. The staff didnt say welcome we have such and such happening tonight, hope you can join us. The toilets were clean but the paint job was terible, awful colour - flesh pink - clashing outragiously with the bright red at the front of the pub. Has no one advised them of modern colour schemes? What a disappointment - we caught the bus into town and went straight in The Mitre which has just been redecorated - what a difference - maybe they should go for a visit and get some tips!.
