A review of Peking Restaurant by Sevrin Stewart written on Sunday 1st of May 2011
In the mood for a nice Chinese dinner, we opted to visit The Peking Restaurant in Homerton Street,Cambridge after reading some 'good' reviews. We usually travel 37miles to Imperial Bentos in Peterborough, but thought we would try a restaurant closer to home. What a big mistake! Obviously my experience of Chinese food is very different; even though I have eaten Chinese food all over the world from east to west, and bar one experience in a small town in Pontiac, Michigan, the Peking restaurant food lacked flavour, was salty, too much food for children and very overpriced!
We were greeted by the owner/manageress who was very welcoming and friendly. She quickly served us drinks and I ordered a bowl of fried rice for my 4yr old. We had straters of 1/4 peking duck, prawn crackers, and steamed dumplings. The pancakes were greasy and seemed more like undercooked chipattis(indian flatbread), the dumpling were doughy and thick, filling bland but heavy on ginger and instead of being varied all seemed to taste the same. The main courses were double cooked pork, sweet and sour pork on crispy rice(like rice crispies literally)and my 13yr old ordered shredded chicken and fried rice for all. Well the food arrived and was enough for 7 adults, we were never advised by the portion size for my 13yr old otherwise we would have ordered a dish we could all eat. The double cooked pork was salty, the sweet and sour was bland and the rice was full of ham and eggs!
The bill came to just over £100 and the one dish of pork was untouched. My husband only had £90 in cash and told the waitress she charged him for pork dish that was not eaten. She refused to take off bill so we had to go to cash point to get more cash(don't take cards) and we had asked to pack up the rice and chicken as 3/4 quarters was left and did not want to waste it. In the end, we just paid the bill and left the food. In hindsight I wished I was American and simply refused to pay for what we did not eat!.
