A review of Maharaja by John Davies written on Monday 3rd of January 2011
My girlfriend and I went to The Maharaja, which despite it's Indian name, is run by Bangladeshi's. The decor and styling is unique to say the least, appearing cluttered and old fashioned. It's as if they've had to cram in as much seating as possible, meaning on some tables, you can't even move your seat back to get up without shuvving your rear end in the face of the diners sitting behind you! The food is average, however as someone else has mentioned, there's more oil in their dishes than the Middle East! The onion bhaji portions were the smallest I've ever seen and a total rip off you'd think they were serving portions for mice.
However all of this could be forgiven if it wasn't for the appalling service we received. We didn't have much of an appetite and so ordered a starter, drinks, naan bread and two side dishes. To my utter shock and dismay, the waiter said "you can't order just that, we can't do it, the chef will not make side dishes unless you order a main dish, it's just not possible" I asked if he was joking and the waiter replied "no it's our law!"
Having lived in a part of London famous for Indian restaurants and having visited countless across the country, I had never heard something so ridiculous in all my life. Surely it's the customers prerogative what they order?? These guys are a bunch of amateurs and a disgrace to all good Indian restaurants in the UK. What a joke!
