A review of Ugly Duckling Chinese Restaurant by A person written on Tuesday 21st of July 2009
My husband and I have, in the past, visited The Ugly Duckling on many occasions and have been extremely pleased with the standard of service and food. So much so, we have even taken his Singaporean relatives there when they have visited.
Today, however, was a completely different story and I can promise we will NEVER return for a repeat performance.
I ordered the roast duck and pork with rice meal and was presented with CHICKEN pieces and VERY foul tasting (and looking) bits of pork. The food was also literally SWIMMING with a very strong-tasting sauce. My husband and I decided to eat the rice and vegetable and make do as our baby daughter was asleep and (if you're a parent you will know) it's just easy to get on with it while you can!
At the end of the meal I drew the waitresses attention to the poor quality of the food (very politely I might add) and to my utter disgust, after taking with the chef, told me it was indeed duck! I think it's despicable she would treat my husband and I like fools. She was extremely reluctant to give me any compensation and when I suggested I pay half the price if the dish was £8.00 she then showed me the menu and said "£8.50! so I charge £4.50!"
No apology, no customer service, not a satisfactory result in my mind and to add insult to injury, service charge is added and you have to pay it!
I think this restaurant relies on tourist trade, where they charge extortionate amounts for extremely poor quality. What a shame then that they don't realise the potential in keeping local customers who offer them a steady stream of custom..
