A review of Hills Road Sixth Form College by Doodlebug written on Monday 19th of January 2009
I came to Hills as an out of catchment student, not knowing anyone at all. Having always been a pretty hard-working student, I found that for the most part I could deal with the work load although I definately got way more than my old friends who'd stayed on at my local school for sixth form. The biggest failing of Hills is your introduction to it. From the first day, when I came home sobbing, I found it extremely hard to settle in and make friends because it seemed that everyone had come from the same schools and had their own social circles which I didn't fit into. The lonliness was horrible and that coupled with the 50 minute train journeys almost made me quit.
However, I decided to stay and once I'd got through that first term I was happy. I'm now in my final year and although the pressure is enormous it is more peer and self based than teacher based. Everyone has a similar work ethic and with 600+ students in a year you are guaranteed to find people who you have something in common with. I think that Hills preps you really well for university (it seems expected that the majority of the students will go) and I enjoy a freedom that my friends from my local school don't get. You are treated as young adults who can make their own decisions (except for when it comes to ucas forms where they baby you every step of the way!) and althought it was almost impossible at the start, I am now extremely happy that I stuck with it and wouldn't go back to my old school. .
