A review of Thanh Binh Vietnamese Restaurant by Jon Rambo written on Friday 19th of September 2008
Food: meat/fish nicely flavoured and reasonable portions. But strange garnishes and sides...lots of sprigs of mint, over-cooked rice (cardinal sin in an asian restaurant), and chopped up carrot/cabbage in lieu of something more exotic.
Drinks: Bring your own bevvie. Nice but costs >£1 corkage.
Service: Competent enough, somewhat slow. Polite but not personal.
Interior: Cramped. Tables close together. Clean and tidy but has the feel of a cafe not a restaurant.
Price: too high for the quality/quantity. £32.50 for starter + two mains and no drinks (tap water). They chuck on a 10% service charge which is unacceptable since the mains are all £10~£13 to begin with.
Verdict: Poor value. Cut the prices by a half and it would become acceptable. It's the only Vietnamese place in Cambridge (baring the Chinese/Vietnamese hybrid in Chesterton) so they obviously charge an "exotic experience" premium. Go to Shoreditch and get better Vietnamese food for half the price in a way cooler location..
