A review of Bakers Oven by Ex worker written on Tuesday 20th of May 2008
I worked for the Bakers Oven as a Sales Assistant. Before this I worked in a variety of management roles in office jobs(pre-child days). Due to the very fact I needed to work part time. This was the only Company that I found that could offer me part time (and I mean part time, not "can you come in whenever we want you to) work.
We had to deal with, quite frankly a bunch of Simians (i,e customers) day in and day out. Most of the customers are just everyday people going about their lives, pleasant enough etc. BUT some of YOU are shocking. No manners, rude just for the sake of it, and some seem to think we are oblivious to the tirade of abuse and rudeness inflicted on us. WE ARE NOT.
Shop workers have the hardest job....we are on our feet for hours a day, without so much as a drink until our breaks as little as 10 minutes in a five hour shift. Then there is the pressure from Head Office and Management to "Sell, sell, sell!" Never mind keeping the shop tidy and clean, endless paperwork, phone answering, the meetings we have to attend. The pay is laughable and the bonus's hhmmmm....
Many of the customers look stunned when told products arent ready yet - "I have to wait 5 minutes for a freshly baked sausage roll, straight out of the oven?!" they gasp, and so launch into yet more abuse which of course is MY fault personally. Id love to be allowed tell them children in Africa are starving to death.....it might make them think. We have to endure screaming brats and elderly people who, quite frankly shouldnt be out alone. I often wondered if I was in fact a social worker in disguise!
We all have families, lives of our own and believe it or not.....we just work there. Thats it. We have troubles of our own, problems just like yours, and we are expected to be constantly smiling and happy. Life aint like that. Get over it.
So the next time you are in a shop, a cafe or anywhere similar. BE KIND TO THE STAFF. Many of your gripes are completely beyond OUR control, yet we still take the blame. If you are nice to us, we are nice to you. Its that simple. The next time you go into a shop, the staff DO REMEMBER if you are worth the extra effort. If you come in all attitude and rude. Forget it.
