A review of Midsummer House by Joanna Munroe written on Monday 17th of March 2008
Last Friday evening, we returned to dine at the Midsummer House after a break of about 4 years. My partner and I had been frequent diners there, but following the introduction of new cooking techniques, namely the slow cooking of fish and meat, which was not to our taste, we voted with our feet and have turned to The Great House in Lavenham whenever we need a fix of French/mediterranean cuisine.
Returning to the Midsummer was a disappointment mainly because we experienced, not just one, but a succession of 'slip ups' by the staff. Firstly, sparkling water was poured into my glass which already contained still water. Secondly, I was given the wrong cutlery; I had ordered fish and I was given a meat knife. Then, a rather expensive wine was sloshed into my wine glass which was filled almost to the brim, and last but not least, some of my cherry dessert was spilled onto the white tablecloth making a hideous mess.
Having eaten in some of the world's best restaurants, that is to say a lot of 2 star and one 3 star restaurant, I expected better/perfection from the Midsummer House. I should also add that only 2 out of the 3 courses were good; sadly the dessert was poor.
You might think I am being harsh, but really, for 2 stars it has to be brilliant on all counts. .
