A review of Maplin Electronics by Steve - Westcountry written on Sunday 13th of January 2008
Having worked for Maplin at their Southend-on-Sea & Bristol shop back in the mid 80's (for 2 years) the majority of staff new about the products because we were all encouraged to take an active interest in the stock sold. The company then was owned and run by a family (Doug, Dave & Sandra?) who took an active interest in their staff, remember the Bingo Sessions held every monday at Head Office on Monday mornings to get the week off to a good start? Back in my days at Maplin, the main core of stock sold was the individual components which were used to build projects. Remember such magazines as Everyday Electronics, Maplin Magazine & Cirkit ?? Practically every day, customers would come in with their list of components to build their various projects. Nowadays it is cheaper to buy "ready made" projects off the shelf. OK times have changed for everyone, but Maplin now are just like any other major high street retailer, after one thing, YOUR money, no matter how they get it. Personally I honestly enjoyed working for Maplins, everyone was made to feel part of their "family". Bring back the good old days of customer service and the willingness of customers alike to share their knowledge with us the staff, It was great fun, sadly missed........
