It may not be the end of the world when a customer realises there's a part missing from their delivery but why shouldn't they complain? Why shouldn't they be angry that they had a choice and chose B&Q.. then the latter fails to deliver the goods they promised? yes.. you are right in saying they should not be rude to you especially when you are trying to help them but you are forgetting that B&Q actually pay you for this "help" you are offering.. they sent you on courses to deal with such situations.. they invested in you and spent money to teach you how to put the customer first.
Tackle the problem.. don't blame the customer!!
It's your job so do it.. it's as simple as that and if you feel belittled by doing then perhaps you should seek an alternative employment.
Oh by the way.. I also work for B&Q.
