A review of Midsummer House by Tim H written on Friday 18th of May 2007
Hugely pretentious and over-compilcated food. Each dish awash with either cream or foie gras (often both) making them so rich they are verging on the inedible.
We ate from the dinner menu, and judging by the test tubes etc that were being presented to the other tables, we made a good decision.
The chef has obviously discovered the use of a soda-stream type foaming device for his sauces. EVERYTHING that arrives on your plate - starter, main course or pudding - has a foamy sauce either applied in the kitchen or if you're really lucky, then at the table.
Over-bearing and arrogant service.
The room was about 1/3 full (mid-week dinner) and devoid of atmosphere.
A good wine list, though at around 4x retail, a little overpriced for the restaurant.
In summary - I think the chef is trying to bring Heston Blumenthal to Cambridge, and failing spectacularly. 2* does not have to mean complicated food. If I want popcorn on my main course, then I'll go to the cinema.
Verdict - We had really looked forward to Midsummer House and ended up very disappointed indeed. .
