A review of Midsummer House by Alex Lake written on Monday 19th of February 2007
If you just want a really well cooked meal, then this place is probably not for you. Also, if you want to leave by midnight, then go for lunch.
We had the tasting menu with accompanying wines and we extremely impressed by the feats of culinary wizardry. Very clever (some would say too clever) cooking, not all of which worked, but those that did were real eye-openers.
The wine list has horrendous markups (a great shame), but the food is relatively cheap for what it is making the overall package a good deal. The wines with the tasting menu were pretty low budget on the whole, but mostly well chosen.
The service was a little disappointing when we were there, as many of the staff were very new and were unable to give much information about the esoteric dishes (all they could tell me about the olives were that they were green!). Other tables got very slow service and our meal lasted from 8.30 until about 1am - and we didn't even have coffee!
I would definitely go back to this place, but would only recommend it to foodies who are open-minded..
