A review of Rainbow Café by Miss Nicola written on Tuesday 25th of April 2006
To say that my experience at Rainbow Cafe was a mixed bag would be an understatement. The seating is cramped and uncomfortable, the staff disinterested to the point of rudeness, we had to wait a long time for our food and it wasn't really worth the wait. I ordered bean tacos and my partner ordered the chili. When they arrived they turned out to be the same thing only the taco dish had a couple of UNCOOKED taco shells with it! You are supposed to heat them up so that they're crispy, not just empty them out of a packet onto a plate. Actually if you run a restaurant you should make your own, not get them from a packet! The filling/chili itself was edible, imagine the initial efforts of a first year student who has only just learned to cook. Not only was the food terrible, but the portions were tiny (an old joke but in this case true!)
HOWEVER... we persevered and had dessert, I ordered vegan ginger and chocolate cake from the specials board and it was quite possibly the finest cake I have ever tasted in my life, it was a divine thing of joy.
Over all this was a bad experience slightly salvaged by magnificent cake. I think Rainbow suffer from complacency being the only vegetarian restaurant in Cambridge, I think they need some healthy competition. The main courses are incredibly expensive given the poor quality and miniscule portions.
So have the cake to take away and make your own main course at home, I'm sure you can do better that Rainbow did!
