Selwyn College

SELWYN COLLEGE, situated on the slightly raised ground west of the town, was opened for the reception of students in October 1882. The site covers about six acres of ground, originally acquired from Corpus Christi College

It was founded by subscription to commemorate the name and character of the late Bishop Selwyn, "as a distinguished son of the Church of England, as an example of manliness and simplicity of character, and as a great missionary bishop."

It is founded upon the basis of the Church of England, is open to all members of the Church of England, and its aim is to encourage simple living, and to develop the Christian character in the student.

There are three main courts, Old Court (the original building), Cripps Court (opened in 1969), and Ann's Court (opened in 2005). The Old Court buildings are of red brick with Ancaster stone dressings, in the domestic Tudor-Gothic style, by Sir Arthur Blomfield. The Chapel was completed in 1895, and the Hall was erected from plans by Grayson & Ould, of Liverpool.

Famous alumni include Clive Anderson, Hugh Laurie and Robert Newman.
