Addenbrooke's Hospital
ADDENBROOKE'S HOSPITAL is a large teaching hospital with 1100 beds and is the largest employer in Cambridgeshire with over 6500 staff dedicated to the provision of a wide range of clinical and non-clinical services.
The hospital was founded by the will of Dr. John Addenbrooke, of St Catharine's Hall, in 1719, but at first was insufficient for its purpose, and ill-constructed.
It was subsequently pulled down and re-erected, Sir Digby Wyatt being the architect. The new wards were spacious and well ventilated, but eventually larger premises were required.
The present 40-acre site off Hills Road/ Long Road was purchased in 1951 from the Pemberton Estateat a cost of £4350. A decade later the first phase of buildings were completed and patients began to be admitted.
